This collection contains records created during the pre-park planning for acquiring the Hensley Settlement land national park, family records and research, records created during park administration of Hensley Settlement, and historical research on the Settlement.

I. History of Hensley Settlement Documents, 1928-2001
The materials were created by park staff, researchers, and former residents of the community.
This series deals with the history of Hensley Settlement.
II. Management of Hensley Settlement, 1963-2002
The materials were created by park staff, researchers, and former residents of the community.
This series relates to park management of the settlement and includes planning documents related to the Master Plan, a Farm Management Plan, Interpretive Plan, and a Development and Operations Concept Plan. Dates range from 1963-2002.
III. Lands Records/Maps, 1845-2001
The materials were created by park staff, researchers, and former residents of the community.

Subseries 3 Maps
This series includes deeds, boundary surveys, and maps arranged in three subseries: Deeds/Abstracts; Boundary Surveys; and Maps. The deeds are from Kentucky and Virginia. Individual tract records are also included in the series.
There are newspaper articles and folded documents in the series. The series count is approximately 500 items.
IV. Historic Structures – Reports and Maintenance, 1961-2003
The materials were created by park staff, researchers, and former residents of the community.

This series includes information regarding the maintenance and restoration of the structures at Hensley Settlement. Park staff created the records from 1961-2003. Photos and drawings are included. The series count is approximately 750 items
V. Furnishings Acquisition, 1961-1981
The materials were created by park staff and park researchers.
The series is arranged into four subseries: The first subseries deals with a donation account set up to purchase items for the house. The other three subseries relate to furnishings for specific structures within the settlement.

This series details the furnishings related to Hensley Settlement, both original and purchased later. The dates range from 1961-1981. There are photos included in the series. The series count is approximately 500 items.
VI. Family and Individual Resident Information, 1583-2002
The materials were created by park staff,k researchers and the families from Hensley Settlement.
Iincludes information about William and Sherman Hensley and their descendents. Genealogy records for the Hensleys date from 1583-present. There are also genealogy records for Hensley Settlement. Records for individuals include Thomas J. Cupp, Jake Delk (Delph), W. G. Lee, T.H. Adams, Barnett Thompson, General Gibbons, Lawrence K. Rice, and Clarence Smith. Family records include the Nichols family, Kincaid family, and Gibbons family. Several files include interview notes. This series also includes census records for Hensley Settlement
VII. Oral History Information, 1962-2002
The materials were created by park staff, researchers and the families from Hensley Settlement.
Included in this series are questions and outlines for interviews as well as hand-written notes from interviews. Topics include the schools of the settlement, cemeteries, and individual interviews. There are also two NPS surveys completed by CUGA regarding the park’s oral history collection. There is also a listing of University of Kentucky holdings of interviews related to Hensley Settlement.
VIII. Interpretation, 1968-1986
The materials were created by park and NPS staff.
Series 8 contains a 1971 Interpretive Prospectus, an Individual Activity Plan for “An 1890s Christmas” program, and an annual work plan. There is also information about living history and various activity plans for the settlement. One unique program is the “moonshine” operation at the Hensley Settlement.
IX. Photographs, 1903-2000
The materials were created by park and NPS staff.
The majority of the photos in this series are black and white 35mm images of the settlement. The images document various structures and landscapes.
X. Newspaper/Magazine Articles, 1950-2003
The materials were assembled by park staff.
Newspaper articles comprise the majority of this series; there are several magazine articles as well. Some original articles were retained for the collection but most of the articles are copies on archival paper.
XI. National Register Nomination, 1972-1980
The materials were created by park staff.
This series deals with the nomination of the Hensley Settlement to the National Register of Historic Places. Materials include the nomination forma, correspondence, and maps
XII. Cultural Landscape Report, 2000-2003
The materials were created by park staff and contracted researchers.
This series documents the development of a Cultural Landscape Report done in cooperation with the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services at East Tennessee University. The project was initiated in 2000. Historian Carol Minor Burkhart was the CUGA contact for the project. The primary researchers were Dr. Jean Haskell, Allison Blanton, and Edward Speer. Former CUGA historian Gene Cox also assisted with the project.
Materials include the cooperative agreement with East Tennessee University, correspondence, maps, drafts of sections of the report, and the final report. The report was completed in 2003 but has not been formally approved by the park or the region.
