APA Basic Formatting Rules

Your paper should be typed, double-spaced, with a one-inch margin on all sides.  Generally a Times New Roman 10-12 pt. font is used.

There are four major components to the paper:

  • Title Page [with the title, author(s) and institutional affiliation]
  • Abstract [not always required, but a quick summary of the paper's content, approx. 150-250 words]
  • Main Body
  • References

Be sure to include a header on all pages of the document.

If you would like to see some formatted paper examples, the APA provides samples here.

APA Style

This guide is designed to help those who need a one-stop reference guide to APA formatting.

The APA (American Psychological Association) citation style is the preferred form for those in the social, behavioral, and business sciences.  The rules of APA style can be found in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.  Though this is the official reference guide, there are many APA style guides availabel to help standardize your citations (Concise Rules of APA Style or Writing With Style: APA Made Easy).

Additionally, the American Psychological Association website has a number of resources for quickly learning the basics of citing using APA, including a tutorial, a blog, and an FAQ page.
