MBA Research: Industries and Best Practices

North American Industry Classification System

The federal government created NAICS codes in order to gather statistical information about business enterprises in the United States.  The codes are very useful when conducting research.  For instance, you can limit your search in Business Source Complete by using a relevant six digit code.

Visit the NAICS website to find codes and choose industry codes that pertain to the business you are planning.  When searching Business Source Complete, find the NAICS code limiter and insert your code.  Conduct your search in the advanced search box and see if the code helps narrow your search.

The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Code List may be helpful as well.  The SIC list was supplanted by the NAICS list but some industries still require it.
