OSTMED.DR; Internal Medicine blog by LMU-DCOM graduate is seeking submissions

Access to the full-text content of OSTMED.DR has been restored.

One of our LMU-DCOM 2012 DO graduates, Britton Jewel, sent Lisa an email a few minutes ago to let her know about his internal medicine blog at http://www.internalizemedicine.com/. In his own words: “This is a blog that I started about a year ago where I post my thoughts on medicine, mnemonics, and helpful tips. I think that this would be vey [sic] helpful for DCOM students and was wondering if you would mind sharing it with them. Also, I am always on the lookout for new content, and it would be great if any students would be interested in writing for my site. I would provide credit to them, and a link back to their site if they have one. All of my content is free, sourced, and written by me so far.” Britton was one of three students who Lisa Travis remembers very fondly as practically living in what she thinks is the most beautiful and comfortable room in the library, the room above the Appalachian collection.

Updates to the Free Apps for Mobile Devices Webpage

LMU-DCOM OMS Michael “Chad” Cozart’s free glaucoma app for Android devices was released yesterday and is listed in bold for the entry for Google Play within the Android section of the free apps for mobile devices webpage. Updated the entry for Prognosis on the free apps for mobile devices webpage. There are now three free apps – the main one for all specialties, one for cardiology, and one for diabetes.

The Thieme E-Book Library is now accessible on iPads. Using the free iPublishCentral Reader app available in the iTunes store users can download and read all titles available within our institution’s Thieme E-Book Library collection. New titles will be available for download upon their release.

November 14-21, 2012

Added the Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination videos to the Procedures Videos page that indexes all of our subscription videos. Also added live links to the video resources throughout the page.

Added two 2012 Mr. DCOM videos to the entry for Mr. DCOM and other videos within the Reed Health Sciences Library’s Humor Break webpage.

Changes have been made to OSTMED.DR, and it now requires subscriptions. The Reed Health Sciences Library is in the process of becoming an institutional subscriber to OSTMED.DR. Access to the full-text articles within the database will be restored once the process is complete. An announcement will be made here when our full-text access has been restored.

We hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday weekend that is filled with love, laughter, and relaxation.
Happy Thanksgiving. May your break include delicious food, like these cranberries, and be full of love, laughter, and relaxation.

Attention LMU-DCOM classes of 2013-2016 and PA classes of 2013-2014

Be a Health Sciences Library Ambassador!

I would like to have two students per each class of students to serve as a Health Sciences Library Ambassador. This is a new program to get the word out to other students about helpful library resources. My vision for this is for it to be student-driven. The ambassador can tell me what resource we have that he or she would like to promote, and, if freebies are available for that product, I will call reps and try to get posters, bookmarks, pens, keychains, etc. (whatever goodies they have) to give to that student to distribute to the rest of their class; there is no guarantee that I will be able to get enough items to give one item to each member of a class. As different resources are for different years, not all ambassadors will need to distribute the same materials at the same time. The helpful games and tutorials do not provide freebies so promotion of them and other similar resources will have to be done via other means. I welcome student ideas and look forward to watching the program evolve over time. I will expect the ambassadors to give me a heads up as to what they plan to do in advance just so I’m aware. I want the ambassador to distribute items in a fair manner and to not keep the best items for himself/herself. I can ship items to ambassadors who are off campus. I’d like the ambassador to have me review emails before they are distributed. There are resources for different clubs so ambassadors can make sure that the clubs to which they belong are aware of helpful things for their clubs; for example, the Mango database for learning languages is useful to the international medicine club, and some resources could be promoted at the pediatric health fair and others at the Doggy Dash (there are helpful games and tutorials and such for vet anatomy). Students can put in as little or as much time into the program as they like. Students can ask me to find things for their clubs and interests. I will simply appreciate the help with marketing and promotion of resources. I do not expect ambassadors to answer questions about products and do not want them to feel like they have to do so; they can refer all questions to me. If you are interested in being an ambassador, please emaill me at lisa.travis@lmunet.edu with your name and class by 8am on Monday, October 29. I will choose the 2 ambassadors for each class via drawings of all replies for each class sometime at the end of my work day on Monday, October 29.

I hope your day is going well!

Sincerely,
Lisa Travis

DynaMed is updated daily based on a 7-step evidence-based method for systematic literature surveillance. You may see recent updates by clicking “recent updates” in the upper left corner of the DynaMed main page. You may also view recent updates by specialty and view only practice-changing updates within all or selected specialties. Practicing-changing updates are those most relevant for changing clinical practice. You may also set up alerts to be notified when updates that meet customized criteria occur. STAT!Ref has lost the right to distribute McGraw-Hill books, and many of the books in the current collection have been dropped from STAT!Ref Medical. Want to be published? BMJ Case Reports provides a new opportunity

LMU-DCOM has a subscription to a new journal from the British Medical Journal (BMJ), BMJ Case Reports. With its purchase of an institutional subscription to the journal, LMU is a fellow of the journal; only fellows are allowed to publish articles in the journal. The instructions for authors are available at http://casereports.bmj.com.ezproxy.lmunet.edu/site/about/guidelines.xhtml (to view this page, one must login with firstname.lastname as your username and your LMU email password as your password). A signed informed consent from the patient must be obtained, and page with instructions for authors provides a link to the consent form to use. When conducting research involving humans, one must submit an application to the LMU Institutional Review Board (IRB). The LMU IRB application and exempt checklist can be found at http://www.lmunet.edu/curstudents/ORGSP/IRB/forms.shtml. To view a sample case within BMJ Case Reports, click on “Full-Text Journals” on the medical library homepage, conduct a search for BMJ Case Reports, click the link for “BMJ Journals,” click the link for “Last 7 days,” and click “Full text” or “PDF” for an article of interest. Feel free to consult Dr. Teitelbaum, the IRB Chair, or Lisa Travis, Medical Librarian, for assistance with this process.

Mango has added ten language modules

The language learning program, Mango, has added learning modules for the following languages: Cantonese Chinese, Croatian, Danish, ESL Mandarin Chinese, Finnish, Haitian Creole, Irish, Levantine Arabic, Norwegian, and Urdu. Mango can be found by clicking “Databases” on the medical library homepage, choosing Reference Tools, and then choosing Mango and logging in.

New way to receive library training

If you need assistance searching library resources, Lisa has a new method with which to help you. She can conduct a one-on-one online webinar in which she shares her computer screen with you and walks you through what to do or has you share your computer screen with her while she walks you through what to do. To receive training in this format, call or email Lisa and let her know convenient times for you. She will then send you an email invitation to the webinar that will include a link to use.

For OMS-III and OMS-IV students, most library announcements will only be in Rotations Linc newsletter

Except in rare cases in which library announcements cannot wait to be distributed via the newsletter, library announcements will only be distributed via the Rotations Linc newsletter instead of via email for OMS-III and OMS-IV students.

Here are new procedures for getting articles that LMU does not have.

Here’s a reminder about how to find out if LMU has full-text access to an article you need. Remember that while you are searching library databases you can click the “Find it at Carnegie-Vincent Library” or “Reed Medical and Allied Health Library” buttons to determine if LMU has full-text access to the item. Another method to use to check to see if we have full-text access to an item is to search for the journal in our full-text journals portals. To do this, click on “Full-Text Journals” on the medical library homepage at http://library.lmunet.edu/medlib and then type the journal name in the search box and click “search.” If we have access to the journal, you will see a record for the journal that provides information on what years are accessible and links to the content; items labeled as “traditional titles” and “medical library periodicals” are print, not electronic, journals kept in the library.

Here are the new procedures. If you anticipate that you will need articles we don’t have, please register and create an account with our new interlibrary loan software, ILLiad. To do this, click “Interlibrary Loan” on the medical library homepage at http://library.lmunet.edu/medlib. The direct link to the interlibrary loan registration page is  http://lmunet.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/TNF/logon.html.  Click “first time users.” On the next page, click “first time users click here.” Fill out the new registration form; you will need to choose your own username and password for ILLiad. You will need to choose options for whether to hold books at the library or mail them to you. You may change these options at any time.

After you click on the library button in a database, if we do not have full-text access to an item, the page that appears will include the message, “Sorry, no holdings were found.” Click on “Request via Interlibrary loan.” In order for the interlibrary loan form to remember the information about the article, you will have had to have registered for an ILLiad account first (see the previous paragraph). Log into your ILLiad account. The article request form will have the information for the article you need. Fill in any additional needed information and click “Submit Request.” If you did not find the article you need in a database, you may click on the Interlibrary Loan link on the medical library homepage, log in, and fill out the form with information on the needed article, and click “Submit Request.”

If you have any questions about an existing interlibrary loan request, please email ill@lmunet.edu. If you have any questions about anything in this email, please let me know.

I am very pleased to announce that LMU’s subscription to Mango is now activated and free for all students, faculty, and staff to use. To access Mango, click on “databases” on the medical library homepage. Then click “DCOM.” Then click “Other useful databases” and click the connect button in the entry for Mango.

Here is a direct link to Mango that you can bookmark: http://ezproxy.lmunet.edu/login?url=http://libraries.mangolanguages.com/lmu/start. Your login username is firstname.lastname, and your password is the same as your LMU email password.

Within Mango, you can create a profile to monitor your progress by typing in your email address and whatever password you would like to use for Mango in the area for “create a profile.” You will then need to click the activation link that will be sent to the email address you provided. For subsequent logins, you may input your email address and Mango password in the area for “log in.” Upon logging in, Mango tells you the overall number of hours you have spent learning languages in Mango and the number of languages studied.

There are two types of language modules, basic and complete. Basic is for those who only want to use the basics; there are about 9 lessons in the basic modules. The complete module contains 100 lessons and is far more comprehensive. Within the complete modules, there are main lessons, condensed lessons, a vocabulary review, and a phrasebook review; you may enjoy the condensed lessons more than the main lessons since, with the exception of the first couple of lessons, they proceed at a much faster pace.

Slides often ask you to speak the language so you will need a microphone for this. On these slides, you can click “show the answer” and then click the microphone icon to be able to record your voice and listen to a voice comparison of your voice with the actor’s voice.

The following Mango lesson levels are available for the following languages:

Arabic (Levantine) – basic
Chinese (Mandarin) – basic, complete
Dari – basic
Farsi (Persian) – basic
French – basic, complete
German – basic, complete
Greek – basic, complete

I am very pleased to announce that LMU-DCOM now has access to DynaMed. Links to DynaMed are in the fast links section for databases and electronic resources on the medical library homepage, in the A-Z listing of databases, and in the database sections for the DCOM, nursing, and physician assistant programs.

The product provides free PDA access. Please let Lisa Travis know at lisa.travis@lmunet.edu if you want to be sent a serial number to download it to a PDA and use it for one year; you can renew your PDA access after a year if you are still affiliated with LMU-DCOM.

Here’s information on DynaMed. It includes clinically-organized summaries for more than 3,000 topics that are in an outline form that can be used efficiently in clinical settings. DynaMed is updated daily. DynaMed monitors the content of over 500 medical journals and systematic evidence review databases directly and indirectly by using many journal review services. Each publication is reviewed cover-to-cover, and each article is evaluated for clinical relevance and scientific validity. The new evidence is then integrated with existing content, and overall conclusions are changed as appropriate representing a synthesis of the best available evidence. Through this process of systematic literature surveillance, the best available evidence determines the content of DynaMed. You can click on recently updated to see the entries that have been modified today and learn what was changed.

You may wish to click on “Weekly Update” periodically to read the latest update or sign up for the free weekly email. Prepared by the clinician members of the DynaMed Editorial Team, DynaMed Weekly Update is a compilation of blurbs about one to five articles selected from DynaMed’s Systematic Literature Surveillance as articles most likely to change clinical practice. This source will be helpful for finding articles for the journal club.

    Access DynaMed

Dr. Miller received an award for excellence in clinical education from the students; the students noted that he uses current evidence in creating his lectures. Of note is that one of the tools that Dr. Miller uses heavily is DynaMed, and I greatly admire his hard work to ensure that his lectures include the latest evidence.

Tutorials for using DynaMed on the Internet, a Blackberry, and an iPhone are available in the alphabetical list on the right side of this page: http://support.ebsco.com/training/tutorials.php
