This is a group of libraries whose provide underserved nations with free health science journal articles.
Gale Virtual Reference Library
Includes encyclopedias for medicine, cancer, alternative medicine, nutrition, diagnostic imaging, and diets. The search interface can appear in Spanish, French, and Portugese; you may change your language by clicking on “preferences” in the upper right corner. The search results can be mechanically translated into Chinese (simplified), French, German, Korean, Italian, Japanese, Portugese, and Spanish. To do this, choose a language in the pull-down menu within the item of interest and click “translate;” please note that mechanical translations are likely to contain errors. Includes Countries and their Cultures, the New Encyclopedia of Africa, and the Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America. Also includes encyclopedias for arts, business, history, education, environment, law, religion, science, and social sciences. Must login to the LMU proxy to access. Tennessee residents may freely access this resource through their local public library; contact your local public library for details.
Health Information in Multiple Languages
Provides limited health information in 45 languages. All MedlinePlus consumer health resources may be translated into Spanish by clicking on the “espanol” link in the upper-right corner of each page – see health topics, drugs & supplements, encyclopedia, dictionary, news, and more.
iTranslate Voice for iPhones and iPads
Available for iPhones and iPads. Allows users to translate textual words into over 50 languages. Provides voices for 18 languages for free. The free version allows users to share, save, and copy translated text. The paid version allows users to have a conversation between speakers who do not speak the same language. Content covers 34 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish, among many others, as well as a wide variety of English as a second language (ESL) content. Most languages include both basic and advanced levels of learning. Mango allows students to hear pronunciation by native speakers and provides students practice with conversational phrases and dialogues. Mango is the only library subscription that is available for LMU alumni to use; alumni may access the resource within the LMU alumni portal.
Medical Spanish for Health Professionals
Includes audio pronunciations for numerous words and phrases that would likely to be spoken by patients and healthcare providers during clinical interviews and emergencies. See all of the colored boxes except for the one for online tutors. Click on “more” under the heading for quick vocabulary to learn numerous words for body parts.
