Chicago Style FAQs
"What do I cite?"
Any direct quotes, paraphrased quotes or ideas that have been taken from a source. Always be sure to give credit to ideas that are not your own.
"How do I make a footnote?"
In the newer versions of Word it's easier than ever to make footnotes. Select the "References" tab along the top of the page. Then choose the button that says "Insert Footnote". Be sure to format your footnotes to the same specifications.
"Do I have to type the whole citation over and over again in the footnote?"
NO. If you have typed the full citation once in your paper already you can use abbreviated citations. See the example footnote page to the right of this box to see how those should be done.
"With the superscript for the footnote, does it go inside or outside the period?"
OUTSIDE. It should also follow any quotation marks. It's always the very last part of the sentence you're citing.
"How do I cite more than one source in the same footnote?"
Provide the information as if they were separate sources, but separate them with a semi colon.
"Can I use citation generators? Which ones should I use?"
YES, BUT WITH CAUTION. They can be helpful with more straight forward citations, but it's always important to double check the format and content of your citations!
