What is Interlibrary Loan & Who Can Use It?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) lets patrons borrow materials from other libraries. Request items through your library, which will search, request, and facilitate borrowing.

LMU students and alumni, faculty and retired faculty, staff, members of the Board of Trustees, the JFWA, clinical adjuncts, and affiliated residency and/or fellowship programs as determined by the Office of Graduate Medical Education can use Interlibrary Loan.

First Time Users

To request an item through Interlibrary Loan, you must first create an account. To do this, fill out the registration form here: First Time User Registration for Interlibrary Loan.

Registration serves three purposes:

  1. Entering your personal information into ILLiad saves time by eliminating the need to re-enter it for future requests.
  2. Using your LMU email ensures prompt notifications and accurate delivery of requested materials.
  3. Creating a Username and Password provides secure access to your request history and details

Receiving & Returning Items

Receiving

  • Most items requested through Interlibrary Loan arrive within 7 to 10 days.
  • Students attending the Harrogate or Middlesboro campuses must pick up print items at the front desk in the Carnegie Vincent Library.
  • Students attending off-campus sites will have print materials mailed to them at the address provided in the ILLiad account.
  • Electronic articles/chapters will be received as PDFs via email or in the patron’s ILL account.
  • NOTE: The library can only receive print copies of books. Please do not make a request for a book if you need it only in its electronic format.

Returning

  • The lending library sets the due date for the borrowed item. Library patrons must adhere to due dates. If materials are not returned within 30 days of the due date, the patron will be charged a $20 processing fee plus any fees imposed by the lending library.
  • All print items borrowed through ILL must be returned to the front desk at the Carnegie-Vincent Library in Harrogate or must be mailed via USPS  to the Harrogate campus library (using the return label enclosed with the item). Returned ILL items will not be accepted at any other campus.
  • The borrower is financially responsible for the replacement or repair of materials lost or damaged during his/her use of them or for late fees charged by the lending library for ILL items.
