Torts

Torts Course Guide

Introduction

A tort may be defined as an act or omission that causes an injury or harm. Torts are a civil wrong (but not breach of contract) for which courts may impose liability. Torts are generally categorized as intentional, negligent, or strict liability. Introductory torts courses often begin with the study of common law (cases) that articulate an important rule of law. Some areas of torts are common law issues while others may involve researching state statutes. Legal researchers should consult the secondary authorities page to be directed towards resources that may help a researcher determine whether an issue is a common law issue or whether an issue involves researching state statutes as well as cases. This guide compiles primary authority sources and then directs the researcher to secondary sources. This guide also features Study Aids that students may find useful to supplement learning in law school courses.
