Synopsis | The bulk of this collection is comprised of Herman A. Heydt's later poetic works. His poetry often focuses on themes of nature, humanity's interaction with nature, historical figures, and spirituality. |
Provenance | The majority of this collection was originally located in the Board of Directors / Trustees Collection, however it was decided to create a new collection due to the rich cultural and literary content of Heydt's work. Herman A. Heydt's thesis on "Chaucer, the Realist" and the binder providing information into the provenance of this publication were donated by Ellen O'Neill-Stephens, grand-daughter of James O'Neill whom Heydt had dedicated this thesis to. |
Biographical Note |
Born in New York City in 1868, Herman August Heydt took on many roles during his life. As an academic Heydt, continued to pursue his education throughout his life attaining numerous educational degrees and honors. He attended the College of the City of New York earning his Bachelor of Arts and graduating suma cum laude. He earned his Bachelor of Law degree from Columbia University. He went on to attend classes at St. Francis Xavier College earning his Bachelor of Philosophy degree. A Masters and Doctorate from Fordham University soon followed. In 1904 he was appointed as Law Lecturer at New York University. Additional educational honors include a Doctorate of Letters, Doctorate of Law, and a Doctorate of Science of Law. Heydt maintained a life-long interest in Abraham Lincoln, received a diploma of honor and merit from Lincoln Memorial University, and served as a member of the Board of Trustees for LMU. Heydt was a prolific lecturer, author, and poet. Much of his early poetry was published in book format in 1933. He passed away in 1941 at the age of 73. |

Arrangement | The Herman A. Heydt Poetry and Publication Collection is comprised of two series. In series one, individual poems are arranged in alphabetical order according to the title of each individual poem. In series two, a single folder contains information about Herman A. Heydt's thesis on "Chaucer, the Realist" and its' donation. |
