Nursing Administration: Citation Managers

Citation Managers

Citation Managers

Citation managers are highly useful for organizing, importing, and exporting research information. This page gives a brief comparison of the most popular free citation manager tools.

Desktop Versions:

Docear Relatively new citation manager program that is still in beta mode. Open source and available for: Windows, Mac, and Linux. Collaboration features are not stellar, but it does allow for full ownership of citation data.
Endnote Basic Free version of one of the most popular citation managers. Only available online and no mobile app is available. One can store up to 50,000 citations and has up to 2gb of file storage.
Mendeley One of the strongest free citation managers. Millions of citations already exist in Mendeley enabling easy downloading to your file. Social collaboration is possible; the mobile app is a definite strength. The free option allows for 2gb of personal space and 100mb of shared space.
Zotero Direct plugin to the Firefox browser. Open source citation manager program. Along with Mendeley, the largest and best free citation manager.

Mobile Versions:

   Android Mobile Citation Managers:

Scholarley The Android client for Mendeley. A great manager that is designed for phones and tablets. The major drawback is that you cannot sync annotations between Scholarley and Mendeley because of limitations with Mendeley's API.
Zotero Not an app, but a mobile optimized format.

   iOS (Apple) Mobile Citation Managers:

Mendeley One of the best free mobile apps to manage citations. Social collaboration is strong.
Papership Free app that can manage both Mendeley and Zotero accounts. Features a clean, attractive interface with altmetric scoring when available and the ability to highlight. A $5 annotation in-app purchase enables one to annotate papers including the ability to leave audio comments. Highly recommended!
Zotero Not an app, but a mobile optimized format. For mobile iOS access to Zotero files, we generally recommend the free Zotpad app.
Zotpad An iOS app that is a client for Zotero. View your Zotero files and citations in an easy-to-use app format. You can view annotations done in other programs.
