Plagiarism 101

Basic components of a citation:

In-text:

   (Author, Year of Publication)

   Example:  (Smith, 1943)

 

Reference page:

   Author. (Year of Publication). Title. Publisher information.

   Example:  Smith, B. (1943). A tree grows in Brooklyn. New York, NY: Harper Collins. (6th ed.)

                    Smith, B. (1943). A tree grows in Brooklyn. Harper Collins. (7th ed.)

 

General Formatting

  • Header includes page numbers on the top right beginning with page 1 on title page
  • Margins are 1 inch on all sides
  • Paragraphs are double spaced
  • Font is 12pt Times New Roman or Calibri size 11pt, Arial 11pt, Lucida Sans Unicode 10pt, and Georgia 11pt

Title Page

  • Text is center aligned and on top half of page
  • Full title of the paper
  • Author name(s)
  • Include course#, institution and professor's name

Abstract

  • Left aligned. No indent.
  • No more than 250 words
  • Word Abstract is in title case, bolded and centered at top of page

Body

  • The first line of each paragraph is indented 1/2 inch
  • Section headings to organize content (see p. 48 of manual)
  • Title of paper is in title case, bolded and centered at top of first page
  • Do not manually divide words at the end of a line

Reference List

  • "References" is capitalized, bolded and centered at top of page
  • Hanging indent on each reference entry
  • Left aligned
  • Organized alphabetically by the first letter in each reference entry
  • No longer use "Retrieved from" for website reference
