Education (Undergraduate): Exam Preparation Resources

Exam Preparation Resources

In order to get your teaching license, you're going to need to pass at least one Praxis exam.

Which Praxis exam(s) you take will depend on a number of factors:

  • Where do you want to teach?
  • Which age group do you want to teach?
  • What subject(s) do you want to teach?

Once you know which exam(s) you need to take, your next step will be to locate your nearest testing center, choose a date, and register.

Finally, you'll need to prepare for your exam(s).

Explore this LibGuide to find information about requirements and resources designed to help you prepare for your Praxis exam(s).

Certification Requirements

Overview of Tennessee Testing Requirements

  • Prior to initial licensure in Tennessee, applicants may be required to submit qualifying scores on the professional assessments required by Tennessee State Board of Education Policy 5.105: Professional Assessments for Tennessee Educators.
  • Those applying through an out-of-state pathway, and in-state applicants seeking an endorsement in Speech Communication 6–12 and/or Gifted Education Pre-K–12, may be required to submit qualifying scores on the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Praxis test and the specialty area assessment(s) required for the endorsement area(s) sought, prior to initial licensure issuance.
  • Prior to entering an educator preparation program, educator candidates may be required to take the Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) tests to demonstrate their qualifications. The Core tests are not required for licensure.
  • The state of Tennessee accepts the Algebra I (5162), the Mathematics (5165) and the Middle School Mathematics (5164) Praxis assessments as supplemental assessments that can be used to meet the Algebra I employment standard. Additional requirements for the Algebra I employment standard can be found on the Tennessee Department of Education's website.

Important information

  • ETS discontinued paper-delivered testing; however, Praxis tests will continue to be available in a paper-delivered format as required for ADA accommodations. All scores for previously administered paper-delivered tests are reportable for 10 years from the date the test was taken. To satisfy licensure requirements in Tennessee, scores must be no more than 5 years old and the assessment and the test code must be those currently required in Tennessee.
  • Tennessee requires a full and correct Social Security number (SSN) in order to receive score reports and process educator certification applications. ETS does not require SSNs for its own purposes but will submit it to Tennessee with assessment results. Failure to provide an SSN will delay processing of licensure applications.

Score reporting

  • If you test in Tennessee at a test center or at home, and your Praxis profile address is in Tennessee, your score report will be sent automatically to the Tennessee Department of Education.
  • If you test outside Tennessee or your Praxis profile address is not in Tennessee, your scores are not automatically sent to the Tennessee Department of Education. To have your scores sent to the Tennessee Department of Education, you must select the Tennessee Department of Education (state code 8190) as a score recipient when you register.
  • For all methods of Praxis testing, to request additional score reports you must select the Tennessee Department of Education (state code 8190) with each additional score report request.

Exemption from testing

Candidates for licensure in the following areas are required to complete the appropriate specialty area assessments only and are not required to take the PLT assessment:

  • School Counselor PreK–12
  • School Psychologist PreK–12
  • School Social Worker PreK–12
  • Speech/Language Pathology PreK–12

For further information on assessment requirements, contact the Office of Educator Licensing and Preparation.

In Tennessee, you must take the assessments required for each area of licensure and endorsement sought. Tennessee does not accept other states' tests.

Overview of Kentucky Testing Requirements

How to qualify for certification

For initial certification in Kentucky, all candidates must:

Important information

  • Not all tests are offered on each administration date. Please plan ahead by checking Test Centers and Dates.
  • ETS discontinued paper-delivered testing; however, Praxis tests will continue to be available in a paper-delivered format as required for ADA accommodations. All scores for previously administered paper-delivered tests are reportable for 10 years from the date the test was taken.
  • Kentucky requires your name, address, date of birth and Social Security number (SSN) to process educator certification paperwork. ETS does not require your SSN for its own purposes, but if provided will submit your information to the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (KYEPSB) with your test results. Failure to provide the information requested above could delay processing of your certification application.
  • Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs) are not required to take the Special Education: Core Knowledge and Applications (5354) or Speech-Language Pathology (5331) assessments for Kentucky educator certification. Please contact the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board for additional information on SLPA educator certification requirements.

Score reporting

  • If you test in Kentucky at a test center or at home, and your Praxis profile address is in Kentucky, your score report will be sent automatically to the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.
  • If you test outside Kentucky or your Praxis profile address is not in Kentucky, your scores are NOT automatically sent to the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board. To have your scores sent to the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board, you must select the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (state code 7283) as a score recipient when you register.
  • For all methods of testing, to request additional score reports you must select the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (state code 7283) with each additional score report request.

Who must take the tests?

Most educator candidates or those wishing to become certified in Kentucky must take the Praxis tests. If you are an Industrial Education candidate, see the examination prerequisites for occupation-based career and technical education educators or contact KYEPSB.

Note: A passing score on a test, as required at the time you take the test, shall be valid for the purpose of applying for certification for 5 years from the test administration date.

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) Requirements

Prior to entering an educator preparation program at your college or university, you are required to take the Praxis Core tests to demonstrate your qualifications. See the Test Requirements page to view passing score requirements.

Praxis Subject Assessments

Traditional certification route

Individuals who have completed a traditional educator preparation program must successfully complete the required Praxis Subject Assessments as part of the educator certification process.

Overview of Virginia Testing Requirements

How to qualify for licensure

Individuals interested in applying for initial licensure in Virginia, must earn a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and should review the following documents for more specific details regarding Virginia's licensure process and procedures:

Find further online licensure assistance at the Teach Virginia website, which includes details on obtaining or renewing a license, applications, assessments, endorsements and routes to licensure.

Score reporting

  • If you test in Virginia at a test center or at home, and your Praxis profile address is in Virginia, your score report will be sent automatically to the Virginia Department of Education.
  • If you test outside Virginia or your Praxis profile address is not in Virginia, your scores are not automatically sent to the Virginia Department of Education. To have your scores sent to the Virginia Department of Education, you must select the Virginia Department of Education (state code 8425) as a score recipient when you register.
  • For all methods of Praxis testing, to request additional score reports you must select the Virginia Department of Education (state code 8425) with each additional score report request.
  • Even though your scores are electronically submitted, Virginia requests that applicants for licenses submit a copy of all official score reports because scores may not be loaded due to discrepancies in identifying information.

Important information

  • ETS discontinued paper-delivered testing; however, Praxis tests will continue to be available in a paper-delivered format as required for ADA accommodations. All scores for previously administered paper-delivered tests are reportable for 10 years from the date the test was taken.

Who must take the tests?

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) tests are accepted for entry assessment to Virginia approved programs of educator preparation.

Prior to licensure, you must achieve passing scores on other Virginia Board of Education-approved professional teachers' assessments.

Praxis Subject Assessments are required for specific licensure and endorsement areas.

Alternate route program

Learn more about the Virginia Career Switcher Alternative Route to Licensure Program, including the application process and required tests.
